08 Loose Ends: More Boris and Kurihara

Boris with Michio Kurihara Cloud Chamber (Pedal, 2008 )

I was having a discussion with my friend the other week about what albums we should be expecting soon.  I remarked that Boris was due for a new release because they release like twelve different albums/singles/EPs per year.  The very next day I was informed of the existence of Cloud Chamber, their latest collaborative effort with guitar stud Michio Kurihara.  Right on schedule.

Okay, let’s get one thing out of the way right now– this is NOT Rainbow. Yes, Michio Kurihara is present, but Boris has basically adopted him as their fourth member at this point. Cloud Chamber, is like so many releases Boris puts out in between proper albums: experimental.  It isn’t prog rock with blazing solos and it isn’t riff-heavy rock.  Two tracks of scorched Earth guitar noise orgy.

Track one begins with a heavy bass reverb, eventually being joined by the double helix guitars of Wata and Kurihara.  This is a formless beam of annihilation refracted through stained glass cathedral windows.  A fine Yellow Swans impersonation.  Track two is decidedly more chaotic and far more psych-influenced.  Kurihara wields his guitar like a weapon of mass destruction, raining down destruction on everything with no regard for the safety of others.  A typhoon of noise terror that rips the synapses from their foundations.  This is on some nasty Merzbow shit.

Again, I will reiterate– This is NOT Rainbow. This is one part drone evil, and one part destructive mind fuck.  It’s for diehard Boris fans and experimental music enthusiasts alone.
