Into the Abyss

Shipwreck - Abyss

Deathwish Inc. just continues to kick the ass of the hardcore world. Another month, another fantastic set of releases. New albums from Puling Teeth and Shipwreck that are guaranteed to take a belt sander to your face until all that remains is bone. Although the new Pulling Teeth is great, this post is about those ocean dwelling misanthropists, Shipwreck, and their new album Abyss.

Abyss is a furious hardcore concept album about man’s struggle to rise from the deepest, darkest depths of the ocean and be free. In the process, Shipwreck cranks out a collection of mid tempo, crushing hardcore that hearkens back to the early days of metallic hardcore. Abyss is a very dark album, with lots of apocalyptic imagery and suffocating despair permeating pretty much every track.

“Ascent” has become my standout track, as it’s essentially the climax of Abyss’s epic journey. Starting off with a sparse, ominous guitar passage and building into a powerful tidal wave of riffs, “Ascent” is the most cathartic song on the album. It also presents some fantastic mic grab opportunities for show-goers with the awesome lines like “Climbing higher/ To the summit/ Striving harder/ To overcome it.” The track represents the perfect culmination of the entire struggle presented on the Abyss.

Abyss is a wonderfully paced album and a tremendous debut for a band that is set to make big waves (no pun intended) in the hardcore world. And besides, the album is eight fucking dollars over at the Deathwish store. No excuses, people. Buy it.
